Reflection - Sept. 5

Share your thoughts on today's activities. (Why was it necessary to discuss the importance of Stage Two - Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support? Keep in mind that the repetition strategy of reviewing activities allows one to be a reflective decision maker and knowledgeable scholar. We will further discuss this in class.)

  1. It was necessary to discuss the importance of stage two because it allows us as writers to have a set focus and plan for our writing. After using stage one strategies, it would be best to set the main focus for writing to interest the audience. And to progress in the writing process it is best to have the details from stage one organized with the help of the stage two processes

  2. Today I read about the writing process stage two. I found it to be helpful to be able to identify what your subject and focus are in your essay. This I think can make your essay have more content because you are not only stating your subject but also further explaining it so that your audience will better understand what you are writing about.

    2. Focusing your topic in an essay is a great way to have enough to write about. Writing for an audience is also important in college level writing.

    3. Yes I agree, make the audience understand better as will as making them want to read even further.

    4. Organization is key to any essay. And you presented that well in your post :)

    6. The writer must always present what his or her paper is about through the thesis.

    7. To a reader, having an understanding of what the paper is about is really important. Otherwise, they would not bother in reading the rest of the essay. If they did, they could only guess at what your idea on the topic was. If you want others to agree with your idea, you have to state it clearly. Stage two is an important factor in helping you do that effectively.

  3. Stage Two was very informative about thesis statements and organization in writing. Organization when writing will lead to better essays. Essays that are well organized become more interesting and easier to read. Stage One will need to be used every time as well as Stage Two to create the best papers possible. The recursive nature of these processes make them easy to learn.

  4. I read about The Writing Process: Stage Two today. It was pretty interesting because of all the things I learned. I also knew already what it was going to talk about because of all the post on Moodle. If I could I would have just skipped out on the reading and just read all the post on Moodle. But then again, this book took away half my paycheck, so I decided to just read it.

    2. Stage Two is important because finally we are on our way to writing an awesome paper. It was also important to discuss today's topic because a lot of ideas or reasons came out on why its an important topic.

    3. You're funny. I do agree that we didn't really need to read the book to know what to write about because everyone gave good informations about it on Moodle. The book was expensive. You should've tried looking for someone selling a used book.

    4. Yes, the books are very expensive and we should all read them. These beginning chapters are very important.

    5. This book is a bit expensive. Which is why I think you did the right thing in reading the book, which can explain the process better, than just reading the posts on Moodle.

  5. The big concept explained in stage two was your thesis statement and organizing your writing to make a good essay. If you do not organize your information then it will be all over the place. A good way to organize your information is to put it in the order you are going to talk about it in your thesis statement. By doing that you have a thesis that is put together well and you set up the next paragraphs for your essay.

    1. Yes, I agree. That is a big concept, making your reader read and keep on reading, and keeping your reader from getting confused.

    2. Aside from the thesis statement, organizing our writing is also very important. If your ideas are just thrown anywhere in the format of the essay, your readers will be really confused and your ideas will not be presented properly.

  6. It was necessary to discuss the importance of stage two to demonstrate how well we understand it. It also allowed us to see what the others had in mind about creating the controlling idea and developing the support. Stage two of the writing process was helpful in writing an essay because it teaches how to make a good subject and focus and how we can organize the topic to develop the supporting information.

    1. I like how you got straight to the point and summarized the overall importance of chapter two. It is pretty much telling us how to make a good thesis and showing us techniques we can use to support it. I consider this part of an essay to be the most important.

  7. Stage two of the writing process is about your controlling idea. With a controlling idea you need to support it. This concept directs the readers thoughts on what the passage is about. If you lack a controlling idea, you will either bore the reader or confuse them. I really like making topic sentences because it gives your reader more understanding. The supporting details only emphasize your topic sentence to some extent.

  8. Stage two of the writing process is about having a controlling idea and developing support. The controlling idea is the main topic point of an essay, sentence, or paragraph. The controlling idea should not be too broad or too narrow. The book explains that an effective controlling idea should have developing support. Having an effective controlling idea is important because it is what the essay is about. The controlling idea is what catches the reader's attention.

  9. Stage Two discusses the elements of a thesis and what is needed in order to write a good thesis with adequate support. I believe that the most important part of an essay is it's thesis; without it the reader will be lost. The thesis also gives leverage to the writer because it is the stepping stone to his essay. Once the writer creates his thesis he will be able to build around it and support it. Those support can be used to construct the body of his essay. I think Chapter Two was beneficial for me because it showcased different ways to support your thesis. It also gave various examples of different thesis' and explain why some of them were too vague or to broad.

    1. Good point about how the thesis gives leverage to the writer. I also noticed that after I complete a thesis, I find it easier to complete the essay because there are many ways to support the idea. All you have to do is organize it effectively.

    2. Chapter 2 was very helpful to me as well because of the many examples of outlining your supporting ideas in order to strengthen your thesis.

  10. It is necessary to discuss the importance of stage two because it will benefit the writers. It will help them think and create a subject and a focus for their controlling idea. When you already know what you are going to talk about, organizing your supporting ideas will be easier if your topic sentence/thesis statement is interesting.

    1. I think chapter two is very beneficial as well. Since we've already come up with ideas from stage one, it should be more clear to us about what topic we are going to write about. Discussing stage two is what helped us improve our skills in developing a strong thesis statement.

  11. Stage 2 of the writing process consists of writing a controlling idea and organizing/ developing support for that idea. An effective controlling statement has a topic sentence and a thesis, which has a subject and a focus. A subject is what you want to write about and the focus is what you what to do with your subject. When writing a controlling idea, you should be clear and not too general. Organizing support includes three tools: listing, clustering, and outlining. I personally like outlining because it allows me to plan the topics I want to talk about and how I will organize them.

  12. Today's reading was on chapter 2 about thesis statements, main topics, ect. I thought it was very interesting and very useful for any form of writing. The exercises were really not necessary though. Maybe its just be but it didn't really help. I also read about the three types on organizing your thoughts an ideas. I personally like the outlining. It's a clean and neat way to keep things intact.

  13. Stage two brings up the thesis and it's supporting detail. The thesis is the most important part of a paper because it gives the paper meaning. Think of the thesis as the heart of the paper. Without it, there would be no supplementary detail, nor a body for the paper. This displays the true importance of the thesis' presence.

  14. The importance of stating your controlling idea and supporting it is to properly present your views to the readers. If you don't organize your material well, the readers may become confused or bored. There are three tools that can help you organize your supporting material with are listing, clustering, and outlining. With those tools, they can help you properly put focus on a particular subject or word and express your opinion.

  16. Today's discussion on stage two of the writing process is important to me because I feel that writing a thesis is one of my weak points. I'm okay when supporting the thesis, however, what is the point when the thesis is not very clear or strong to your reader? By reading this chapter, it taught me how to develop a strong thesis, which will result in a much more well-written essay. I will certainly use this information when writing future essays. Stage two is emphasized the importance of an essay. It is the most crucial part of an essay because it is what ties all the information together.

  17. It was important to discuss Stage 2 on Moodle because it reviewed us on the reading material. Even though it is repetitive, it's helpful because it's like studying the information over and over again...about the controlling idea, thesis, and ways of finding/outlining the supporting ideas.

  18. It was important to discuss The Writing Process: Stage Two is Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support. The importance of controlling idea is the topic sentence for a paragraph and the thesis of an essay. If your papers have no controlling idea, no topic sentence or thesis; the focus on your paper will be misunderstood and very confusing. Your readers won't be interested in what your paper is about if there is no topic sentence to caught their attention. The best ways to organize your papers is using three methods: listing, clustering, and outlining. We've already talked about these three methods in our past moddle/class sessions. I believe we would be familiar with these methods by now.
